New architecture and brick-and-mortar development is not all that is needed to build a city that is ready for the future. Cities hardest hit by de-industrialization also face an urgent need to provide equity, inclusion and access.
Author and local architect Klaus Philipsen will discuss the key findings of his new book, Reinventing the American Legacy City, at the The Annual Urban Design Lecture of AIABaltimore.
Philipsen’s book was written after the unrest in 2015, in many ways Baltimore’s most difficult year in recent memory. Philipsen will share his latest observations and suggestions for the reinvention of Baltimore in the areas of equity and social justice, governance, and innovation, technology and disruption, with special attention on opportunities for equity, access and a better city that could come from disruption in transportation.

Speaker Bio
Klaus Philipsen, FAIA, is president of ArchPlan Inc., an architecture and urban design firm in Baltimore specializing in community revitalization, adaptive re-use, historic preservation and transportation planning since 1992. He has been named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects for using his profession to affect communities through advocacy. He is a recipient of the Baltimore Larry Reich Award given to individuals whose volunteer and professional work exemplifies a special commitment to community-based planning and design. Philipsen has lately rediscovered writing and publishes on his blog Community Architect. He wrote an architectural column in the Baltimore Business Journal for two years. He is a frequent radio talk show contributor on urban affairs. Most recently, he authored Baltimore: Reinventing the Industrial Legacy City, published by Routledge.
Additionally, Philipsen participated in Mayor Pugh’s transition team for transportation, is a board member of the 1000 Friends of Maryland, is president of NeighborSpace, co-founded D center, and is active in Transit Choices. He is also the president of his local community association. He chaired the Urban Design Committee of AIA Baltimore for 20 years and is past chair of the national Regional and Urban Design Committee of AIA (RUDC). Klaus is a regular participant of national Advisory Panels dispatched by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) to advise stakeholders about urban planning issues and has participated in local ULI Technical Assistance Panels. He was for ten years a member of the Maryland Growth Commission and served for ten years as Councilman of a borough in Stuttgart, Germany.
Philipsen received a five year degree of architecture at the University of Stuttgart, Germany in 1975. He has also worked as an architect and planner in Stuttgart, Germany and London, England, and has resided in the US since 1986. Philipsen is married to Nayna Philipsen, JD, PhD, RN, Professor and Director of Academic Affairs at Coppin State University. The couple has six adult children.
